Everyday Mathematics

Unit 3 Linear Measurement & Area
Please read your yellow parent (math) folder to help with vocabulary terms, ideas, and home links.
Students are learning about a standard unit of length. I used the kids to create a "Class Shoe" unit of length and then used the average length of all of their feet to measure things around the classroom. Wednesday they will be using rulers to measure to the nearest inch, half inch, quarter of an inch, and eighth of an inch. Homelink 3-2 will go home Wednesday evening.

Social Studies Unit of study - Pioneers
Students have been learning why did families & people decide to move west.  Today in their pioneer journal they had to write a letter to family back home..."  (pretend) Mrs. Sabin showed the class a little of a couple episodes of Little House on the Prairie when the family packed up in the big woods of Wisconsin looking for a less crowded piece of land. They saw some of the troubles they encountered and then what it was like to choose a place to live, unpack the wagon, and build a one room house. Tomorrow they will have to put up a tent as a class.  Random fact: A one room pioneer home could be built in one day!
                              Reading
Please send the Wildcat reading calendar in by Friday. October book orders will go home this week. Please order by next Wed. if you are interested. You are not obligated to order.
Students did a fun activity to learn their vocabulary words for the new story The Terrible EEK. I was kind of like playing the game Balderdash. The story is a tale about a father and a boy who ride out a stormy night. The father shares that he is most afraid of a thief, a wolf, and a terrible leak because they live in a hut with a thatched roof. You have to have your child bring this one home to learn how the story ends. Students will be working on making & revising predictions, fantasy vs. reality, and cause and effect.

                                Spelling
Students will be working on spelling patterns during the week and will take the spelling test on Friday.

                                 Science

Students are learning basic science concepts. How scientists collect, record, and organize data, and how they communicate their findings. Today they heard about different tools scientist use, and they learned about the graduated cylinder.
